This newspaper came from a conductor that entered service with Chicago Burlington & Quincy as a brakeman on 19 Feb 1936 and promoted to conductor on 29 Dec 1947 and retired after 50 years with the company. The part of the line he was conductor on was the Centralia section of CB&Q, Burlington Route. I will be adding items periodically from his log books to special memorabilia. This is the first edition of the newspaper that was sent to servicemen in the military during WW2. It was very informative to keep the men up to date on the company while they were out fighting the war.
This was the first issue of "The Zephyr" especially printed for employees who where in the armed services as denoted with the SPECIAL SERVICEMAN'S EDITION above the Zephyr banner. This issue deals with two Texas trains that celebrate four million mile mark, the Sam Houston Zephyr and the Texas Rocket. The great-great-granddaughter of General Sam Houston who christened the Sam Houston Zephyr in 1936 affixed on the front of the locomotives two service stripes, each denotes a million miles service. There was a luncheon at the Rice Hotel with Honorable Beaufort Jester of Corsicana, chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission spoke with F.M. Law, president of the First National Bank of Houston, master of ceremonies. This was a very important event attended by many dignitaries.
I do not know if the next two papers were an experiment to print a Home Front Edition (HFE) and a "The Special Serviceman's Edition" (SSE) in different color newsprint. The HFE was printed on a mint green colored paper. The SSE paper that was for the most part identical, had printed above the banner, "The Special Serviceman's Edition" and was printed on white paper.
The papers are identical except for one photo, that of Dude Ranch Association President Charles C. Moore shown on page 3 of the HFE and some of the articles. I am assuming that it must have been to confusing or cost prohibitive and was not used again in subsequent editions.
One more note, the SSE has missing many articles that are in the HFE edition, for example: "Lost Purse Quickly Returned"; "SJ Owens, Chicago Agent Dies"; "Meet Old Friends"; "Record Traffic"; "Colorado Ranches have Busy Season"; "Ranches Expect Heavy Postwar Dude Patronage"; "Two Zephyr Makes Good On Time Record"; "Couple Torpedoed And Imprisoned Between Journeys"; "Women Have Zephyr Tickets Autographed."
