I have no idea what these French woodblock puzzles with beautiful color hand painted scenes of a couple, each sitting in Louis XVI ornate wealthy patron Opera box. Each has a question in puzzle form, with the answer & response in French using objects to form words. The only conclusion I can come to is that these were used to hold a powdered snuff. The paper is a thin onion skin type paper. When looked at under a loupe it is obvious that they were printed with woodblocks.
Each one is unique in the design of the dress of the couple and the woodwork around the opera box. In this one he wears the puffed a la Seinfeld type shirt, while she wears a headdress of radiating spikes that form what looks like sun rays. The baluster has angels forming columns for the rails while the canopy has a cusp form, classical design seen in old 1700's architecture.
This one finds some deep reds and green canopy and the curtains. She is holding a bouquet of flowers and he is dressed a wonderful deep blue jacket.
In this one has wonderful colors also. The scanner does these no justice for they have a wonderful patina and are very colorful and bright
The next few have those wonderful puzzle that I am sure are in French. If anyone can figure them out please email me at robtnar@gmail.com or leave in comment section, it would be most appreciative
